While playing with the RFTG-m GPSO I tried using a couple of RS-422 to
RS-232 converters.  These converters can be externally powered or
"self-powered" by the RS-232 signals.

I have a SIGG CyberSerial 4S PCI card for RS-232 with a jumper to provide 5V
or 12V to pin 9

I assume it was used to provide power to small things like USB does now.
