I hope to have a 7081 in the next few weeks that is minus the test leads and
calibration key. I have been able to chase down the connector for the front
panel test leads and two are on the way. However, in fabricating some test
leads, I was wondering if there is anything special about the wires/cable
used to make up the test leads. Silver wire? Teflon insulation? Etc.?
I was planning on using 18 ga. Teflon insulated stranded wire used in
aircraft and some standard 'probes'. For the Kelvin leads, I was thinking
about using alligator clips. Any thoughts, insight, suggestions, previous
experience, etc., would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Joe
Hi Joe,
You will need tellurium copper banana plugs to control the thermal emf's at the meter end and consider the materials that the alligator clips are made of for unintended thermocouples with the copper leads, teflon is a good insulation to have.

Where did you find the connector, I have a 7060 and It would be nice to have a second cable.

And where to purchase TeCu banana plugs? Enquiring minds ...
The only source I've ever found was the Eichmann ETI which is made for the audio market, and the price is about USD90 for four
Thanks

Mike,
I am new to the arena of high accuracy measurements but the plan is for this
to be the 'lab standard'.
There are no banana sockets on the front of the 7081. It is a Fischer 5 pin
connector that took a while to chase down the part numbers. I wanted to be
able to find the correct connector to mate with the unit to preserve its
full level of functionality.
Any suggestions of where to look for probes and alligator clips?
Now to make up some cables. Alternatively, are cables available from
Solartron or another supplier?
Joe

Fred,
I'll post an update when I get the unit and the connectors. If you want the
part numbers of what I ordered, it is:
Part Number Item
S 104 A053-130+ Connector with solder pins
E3 104.3/6.7+B Shielded Cable Clamp (non original)
E3 104.6/6.7 Unshielded Cable Clamp (Original)
You can find the Fischer catalog at:
www.fischerconnectors.com/pdf/catalogue/en/Core_Series_Catalogue_v1.pdf
Is your cable from Solartron? If so, can you send me a close up picture of
the connector end and the 'probe' end of the cable? Would be nice to see
what it looked like from the factory.
Thanks,
Joe

Hi,
NPL recommend Van Damme copper cable. < http://www.vdctrading.com/ >.They make a nice quad core. It's a professional (rather than audiofool) audio cable. PTFE cable has no advantage. It's plated and stiff.
Pomona make TeCu binding posts and plugs tHe binding post is 3770 and cost about £6 each.
