I am looking for a DC voltage source as a reference for my datron 1271 without breaking the bank. Does anyone have a good suggestion ?

You can buy rather cheaply an IC that delivers rather accurate voltages.  I have several of them switch selectable and check my voltmeters from time to time.  They differ slightly from one another but when you average them you can get pretty close.
Not the best way, but it works for me and should do if you aren't seeking the best accuracy.
Several companies make these things and they are very close.  Various voltages are available but mine are 10V.  I have some lower voltage ones in my junkbox but so far haven't fooled with them.

I was going to suggest a Fluke 731A/B but there wasn't anything listed on
auction this morning. It appears someone has just listed one for $165

The best cost effective ultra precision reference is a MAX6126.  2.048 vdc output

http://datasheets.maximintegrated.com/en/ds/MAX6126.pdf

♦ Ultra-Low 1.3µVP-P Noise (0.1Hz to 10Hz, 2.048VOutput)
♦ Ultra-Low 3ppm/°C (max) Temperature Coefficient
♦ ±0.02% (max) Initial Accuracy♦ Wide (VOUT + 200mV) to 12.6V Supply VoltageRange
♦ Low 200mV (max) Dropout Voltage♦ 380µA Quiescent Supply Current
♦ 10mA Sink/Source-Current Capability
♦ Stable with CLOAD = 0.1µF to 10µF
♦ Low 20ppm/1000hr Long-Term Stability
♦ 0.025Ω (max) Load Regulation
♦ 20µV/V (max) Line Regulation
♦ Force and Sense Outputs for Remote Sensing
