Hey all,
Does anyone know anything about these "Ericsson NCD 901 56/1 GPS 03 01" devices? They are all over ebay and are fairly cheap.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/185337146688

https://www.ebay.com/itm/294113323964

https://www.ebay.com/itm/194342806640

They have one SMA connector and two RJ45, probably RS485? I haven't been able to unearth any documentation on them at all. A few pictures of boxes suggests they were made in 2016-2017 in Poland.

Any insights?

Thanks!
John

Hi

Just as a guess …..

POE ethernet powered GPS receiver. Maybe speaking an Ericsson specific
“babble”. Size is about right for a typical GPS module plus a redundant
ethernet interface. The RJ45’s appear to have the normal ethernet signaling
LED’s.

Typical use? Who knows …. quite likely a “time of day” reference to some
piece of gear.

At the price for the cheaper ones, simple answer is to buy a couple and take
a hammer to the first one. Then you will have a pretty good idea of what’s inside
and how to power it up.

Hi

Of course you bought one …. who could resist :)

The question is:

Who bought a case full of them?

If it turns out these are really cool gizmos, once this list documents that, you will see the
prices double  or quadruple overnight. Of course if they are a piece of nonsense, you now
have a nice big pile of scrap metal …..

Hi,

I found these for the Ericsson GPS 02 01 device (casing looks quite
identical to GPS 03 01...)

https://osmocom.org/projects/ericsson-rbs-6xxx/wiki/GPS_02

https://www.coursehero.com/file/35010200/Ericsson-GPS-02-01-Specspdf/

Don't know if they're of any use.

Kim,
This is great, thanks for sharing! The GPS 02's performance looks rather impressive, with 65 channels. I ordered a couple of the GPS 03s as well. It looks like these are mostly plain NMEA strings, but with some additional $PERC strings thrown in that are unique to the Ericsson protocol, which is lightly documented in this paper:

http://uu.diva-portal.org/smash/get/diva2:573991/FULLTEXT01.pdf

Seems like a decent receiver. Looking forward to documenting it more. Reminds me a lot of the Nokia FYGM, which I have documented here: https://ljck.org/doku.php?id=nokia_fygm

Hi,

I received a couple of the GPS 03 modules today and thought the list would
be interested in some pictures of the board inside.

https://i.ibb.co/TKHdvDF/GPS03-1.jpg
https://i.ibb.co/0j6yg5D/GPS03-2.jpg
https://i.ibb.co/HzN94HL/GPS03-3.jpg
https://i.ibb.co/hCsjH6f/GPS03-4.jpg
https://i.ibb.co/kQbbptZ/GPS03-5.jpg

The unit is very easy to disassemble, just drill out the rivet on top and
the upper half of the case will slide off. I initially attacked the clip on
the bottom of the case, but that is unnecessary. The PCB is secured to the
bottom half of the case with a single screw inside. Too easy!

Some of the major parts/ICs on the board:

GPS: Trimble RES SMT 360 (97975-01)
Microcontroller: STM32F105RCT6
Step Down Converter: TI TPS5430
LDO Regulator: TI TL1963A
Quad Differential Line Driver: TI AM26LV31E

Best regards

Excellent work, and what a quick turn! The RES SMT 360 is a great module, especially given the prices of these things. Have you tried to interface with it yet? Curious if the pinout on the GPS02 applies to the 03. I would assume it would.

Excellent work, and what a quick turn! The RES SMT 360 is a great module, especially given the prices of these things. Have you tried to interface with it yet? Curious if the pinout on the GPS02 applies to the 03. I would assume it would. Hi,

The pinout is the same. Here is a screen shot of the message output shortly
after power on:

https://i.ibb.co/ZVrtm5y/serial-output.png

PPS I verified on an oscilloscope. LED activity is the same as the GPS 02.
At power on it does nothing for several seconds, and then blinks during
acquisition, and then goes solid green with a lock. It achieves lock very
quickly! At first power on it had lock within one minute using a puck
antenna sitting by the window in my office.

What is a time nuts approved way to convert the differential PPS to single
ended into 50 ohms? Any references would be appreciated.

Thanks

Easy on the differential output take 1 side and drive single transistor
emitter follower.
They are nice looking units. Though the price is magically up.
Have fun
