Z3801A and Z38XX Issues

One more suggestion... I keep a stash of DB9-TO-RJ45 and DB25-TO-RJ45
adapters around. These come unassembled. I use these on all my
Z3801A's, Z3815A's, and pretty much all other serial gear. You just
put together the adapter you need by placing the pins appropriately on
each adapter. With the right tool you can disassemble them and reuse
them, too.

modem adapter which reverses the TX and RX lines on
one end of the cable. Also not all USB to Serial adapters work.. I
bought an old laptop with a real serial port  at a junk computer shop
for not much more than USB adapter to solve the RS-232 problem

Connect to a terminal emulator and IDQ it you will either see

garbage in which case serial config is wrong and you need to try a new
set of values

Or using a breakout box connect a scope to the txd and rxd lines and

compare pulse widths

Hi

The gotcha is that the 3801 is an “ask for it / get it”

protocol. If you don’t

get the query formatted correctly, there will be no data coming

back. It’s not

like some other GPSDO’s that just yack all the time.

From what I recall, the manual was accurate on the baud, stop

bits,

parity, etc. Just a few thoughts.... Make sure that the serial

port is

working as expected... Do a loop back test if possible. Are you

using

a USB to Serial adapter? Many of them have some weird quirks.

IMHO,

FTDI based adapters work better than others.  Forego using the

Z38XX.

Try using a plain terminal app and see if you get any weird

characters

echo'd back instead of expected responses. Etc... There are a lot

of

possible causes when a serial connection isn't working right.

Shouldn't that be 8 data bits?

I downloaded and installed Z38XX, configured both the Port and

Device

to
the recommended parameters:
Data Rate:  19,200

Parity:  Odd

Data Bits:  7
