Batteries for the 3458A

Hi, I have a 3458A Agilent it has the SMD board and the batteries M4Z32-BR00SH1 it has where manufactured in 1994! So 25 years old. The voltage were 2.8 V and 2.5V respectively. They unit never lost cal data. I replaced them by two batteries from Ebay that were manufactured on 2015.
I asked Keysight for the date of the batteries they sell, they could not tell me just said they will sell "fresh ones". Even if my Agilent unit was built the first Agiletn year 1999 that meant they put 5 years old batteries, but my unit is most likely arround 2005. So that means Keysight put older batteries. Anyone has experience ordering batteries for Keysight? How long do these batteries last on the shelves?. My 2015 batteries how long can they last aprox?

Interesting, not what one would expect from a major manufacturer. That said, I have found lithium batteries last a long long time in storage, obviously fresh would be better but from my experience most likely the older date code did not substantially shorten replacement period. The good news Snap-Hat Batteries are easy to source away from Keysight and most likely later date codes.

What makes you believe that the original batteries were manufactured in
1999? Just because they have the number 99 on them does convince me that
they were made in 1999. I would not assume that is true unless the battery
data sheet indicates the format of the date code.

I personally find it hard to believe that Agilent would fit 5 year old
batteries in a piece of new equipment.

To me, fitting almost 5 year old batteries from eBay in a 3458A is not the
greatest idea. You know nothing about their history - how they have been
stored, whether they are fakes. Whether they are rejects.

Others on the list should be aware that Miguel is in Mexico, so Digikey for
example would not ship batteries to Mexico.

I don’t recall saying 1994 - I wrote 1999. But unless you have a data sheet
confirming the format of any date code, I would not assume that you are
interpreting it correctly. Sometimes date  code are written in obscure ways

  • for example, on HP equipment, a part of the s/n indicates the number of
weeks since 1960 the last engineering change was made.

The super capacitor I recently got you has a date code on it, but you will
not interpret it easily.
